FIC: Against All Odds (Chapter Four)

Konbanwa, minnasan! Thank you so much for the warm welcome back to LJ and of course, from my Nan Desu Kan trip in Denver. I had such a fun time and I was so happy to meet everyone there! Jin, my new computer, works wonderfully.

So, I thought as a gift to everyone, I'd post my next chapter of "Against All Odds." I really like how this chapter evolves a bit more of the storyline, as well as touches on how some of the relationships are still a bit shaky. (It takes a lot to heal from certain things, we all know that.) Plus, if you enjoy Kangin and Hankyung dynamics, this chapter is for you! I hope you all enjoy it and thank you again!

CHAPTER FOUR: Laying Down the Chips

Hankyung gazed out the window as the clouds drifted by the porthole of the plane's window. Donghae was curled up against his side, making soft snoring noises. The taller man smiled down at his partner. All it took to put his companion to sleep was the sound of an engine.

The trip to Seoul had been a relatively smooth one. Jin and Kame hadn't been very pleased about the duo returning back to their home city, but understood the desire to see their old friends. Kame had demanded they call as soon as they settled into their hotel.

Hankyung's thoughts drifted to Kangin. He wondered exactly how his old trainer was faring, e-mails said so little. He was inwardly proud of Kyuhyun and Sungmin. They were proof that Kangin had never lost his true drive when it came to training. The two were extremely gifted. Hankyung knew Siwon would have been proud.

The thought of his lost lover brought an unexpected jolt to Hankyung's chest. Even now, after almost five years, Siwon's image would still make him choke up slightly. He knew that some times it bothered Donghae. Not in the aspect of being jealous, but his smaller friend often felt he could not live up the memory of the taller man. Hankyung always made a point to reassure his lover that he was more than happy.

Donghae whimpered slightly in his sleep and suddenly gripped Hankyung's upper arm tightly. The Chinese man looked down in surprise. Donghae's eyebrows were furrowed together and his delicate lips were drawn into a thin line.

The light brunette had been troubled by the smaller man's recent series of dreams. Last night had been the most vivid and Donghae had awakened with tears rolling down his cheeks. Hankyung still had wished they had spoken about it.

".....don't leave me, hyung..."

The words caught the older man. He quickly looked down to see that Donghae was still asleep. Another shimmering pearl of saline drifted down his cheek. Whomever this person was could still make his sweet friend cry.

"Donghae, wake up, love." Hankyung whispered tenderly in his ear.

The smaller member's eyes opened slowly. He yawned before touching his cheek. Donghae drew back his fingers to see the rebellious tears painting the tips. He gazed up at Hankyung, his normally bright eyes obviously confused.

"You were dreaming." the Chinese man assured him.

"I'm sorry." Donghae's voice shook just slightly.

"Do you want to talk about it?"

The youth bit his lip for a moment before looking seriously at Hankyung.

"Promise me that we'll always be together?"

The words rang eerily in the back of Hankyung's mind. An image of Siwon telling him the exact same thing before an ill fated bullet pummeled through him flashed through Hankyung's inner concious. The effect was so sudden it almost took his breath away.

"Hannieah?" Donghae's voice cracked through the somehow still fresh image.

The taller man smiled slightly and then pressed a kiss to Donghae's forehead. He was the most precious thing to the ex-fighter now and he would do anything to keep him safe.

"I promise."

"......I'm glad I found you."

The peculiar words were the last thing Donghae said before he once again slid down his seat and then pressed tightly into Hankyung's side. The sound of the captain's voice crackled overheard that the plane would soon be making it's descent in Seoul's main airport. Hankyung's eyes were drawn down once again to Donghae. The young man was now sleeping comfortably, a happy smile painted his features.

The older man adored the expression but the image of Donghae's tears and those final words haunted him slightly. When they arrived at their hotel, he would try and ask Donghae about it.

Kangin looked at his watch for what felt like the twelfth time in four hours. He had arrived at the airport early in hopes of surprising his old friend and his companion.

He didn't realize until standing in the waiting area just how much he had missed seeing Hankyung. The return e-mail that the duo were coming made his day. He hummed quietly to himself, thinking of past, much happier memories.

"Hey." came a very familiar voice.

Kangin blinked and looked up at a tired face. Strands of deep hair framed his slightly gaunt, pale appearance.

"Yoochun?" he asked quietly.

"Yah, saw you here at the airport. I know I promised to stay for the party, but I just got word from my publisher. They want me back in the states by tomorrow morning for a promotional stint."

Kangin hoped his face didn't visibly show his disappointment. The stronger man stood and gave Yoochun a solid slap on the shoulder.

"Damn shame. When do you take off?"

"In about two hours. I was just getting something to read for the trip back."

"Hey, Hangeng and Donghae are about to land. Want to stick around and in least say 'hi' to them? I know you have the longest history with Geng outside of Eunhyuk. Least you could do for your old mentor."

Yoochun's lips curled slightly into a smile.

"You make yourself sound ancient, Kangin."

"Some days I just feel a little bit older than others."

Yoochun's expression turned distant. Kangin inwardly kicked himself for making the man dwell on memories he knew he wanted to avoid. However, Yoochun's face gentled and he then turned back to Kangin with a nod.

"Sure, I miss seeing both of them. Donghae was always such a sweetheart."

"He's a good kid, isn't he?"

Yoochun nodded.

A voice announced over the intercom that the duo's plane was landing at the East 17th's Hanger.

"That would be them."

"Maybe we should have brought flowers?"

The two men paused before laughing mutually again. Kangin was grateful to see some of the tension slide out of Yoochun's face. He wrapped his arm around the slightly smaller, thin man's shoulders and guided them toward the entry gate.

A cell phone rang in one of the two men standing in the airport's pocket. They had arrived via taxi and had spent the night in a nearly abandoned corner of the airline. After fishing through multiple credit cards, the duo had finally found one that could not be traced and purchased two tickets.

The taller of the two flipped open the cell and then frowned. He pressed the 'send' key to answer.

The blondish, smaller man stood close by, his eyes watching the growing crowd warily. He pulled himself farther into his coat and tried his best to disappear beneath the material.

"Another job? Who are we working with?"

The taller man nodded a couple times before half smiling. He clicked his tongue in his mouth and then waited a few more moments before closing the phone.

"We got another job."

"Where?" the smaller questioned.

"Right here in Seoul."

"You promised me we'd leave as soon as possible."

"Cool it." the other stated darkly. "It's good money and the employer is reliable. Just have to do a quick job and he said he'll ship us over the great Atlantic and right into New York."

"We've already bought tickets, why do we have to do this now?"

"We need the money, we may have plane tickets, but we've got jack when we get to America. Besides, you know how faithful our employer is. We only have to work with him for this one job and he said he'll never contact us again."

"I seem to recall that about our last job and that one went horribly wrong."

"Technicalities." the other simply pointed out. "It's simple, we go in, set up the necessary components and then the other group will come in and finish the job. We don't even have to get our hands dirty."

The smaller man's eyes narrowed at the taller. He curled his fingers around something in his pocket. The taller could see the flex of the other's hand and he frowned deeply.

"I can't believe you're still carrying it with you after all this time. Get rid of it."

"No!!" the other responded sharply.

The short haired man grabbed his companion's wrist and yanked it out of the pocket. In his hand was a shiny marble with a beautiful orange cat-eye center.

"Man, you are so weird some times."

He went to take the marble, but the other yanked his hand away quickly.

"Leave me alone."

"How about this? We do this job and I won't bother you about that stupid little memento ever again, all right?"

The blondish man looked thoughtful as he gazed down at the tiny item in his palm. He slipped it carefully back in his pocket.

"All right." he finally whispered. "But then you have to swear to me we'll never come back to this city again."

"Yah, yah, you got it." the other said lightly.

The smaller man nodded quickly before something caught his ears. His head whipped up and he narrowed his eyes, trying to make out the source of the voice. Through the flood of people, his sharp vision caught one person picking up luggage from the spinning carousel.

"....it can't be..."

Hankyung chuckled as Donghae tried to catch his bag as it drifted by on the luggage carousel for the fourth time. The smaller man pouted visibly and stuck his tongue out at his lover.

"Now I know why you're not very good at fishing out those water balloons during festival time."

"I am a fish, thus I don't like fishing. It goes against my beliefs." Donghae said matter-of-factly.

The statement made Hankyung burst out laughing. The smaller man pouted once again and then started grinning. Before long the two were laughing so hard they missed Donghae's bag floating by once again.

"Hey, you're disturbing the peace you know!" came a firm but friendly voice.

It only took Hankyung a moment to recognize the man's voice.

"Boss!!" he exclaimed without thought.

Kangin let out a chortle and opened up his arms as Hankyung all but threw himself into them. The slightly shorter man squeezed his long time friend tightly, missing the closeness they used to share.

"You look good, Dancer." Kangin said out of habit. "Looks like the kid has been feeding you well."

Hankyung pulled back and gave a good natured punch to his shoulder. Despite his lack of continual training, Kangin could still feel the sting of Hankyung's natural strength.

"Damn, you still got a hit on you even now, Hangeng."

Hearing his original name made Hankyung flinch slightly. Kangin saw the reaction and then held up his hand in apology.

"Sorry, old habits."

"S'okay, Boss." Hankyung replied. "Just not used to hearing that name any more."

"Looks like Donghae needs some help." came another familiar voice.

"Yoochun!" Donghae cried happily.

The ex-trainer laughed softly as Donghae abandoned trying to get his bag for the sixth time and bounded over to the taller man. The two embraced warmly, Donghae hugging Yoochun tightly. He pulled back to look at the slightly gaunt man.

"What are you doing here?! I thought you were promoting your book in America."

"I had a short visit to see some old friends." Yoochun said softly. Kangin saw the tired look drift briefly through the man's face, grateful when all Donghae did was nod.

"Are you here for the party?" Hankyung questioned the man.

"I was invited, but I have to head back to America. My publishers are sending me on a red-eye tonight."

"That's too bad." Donghae said quietly. "I was hoping you could tell me about America."

A jingle on Yoochun's phone caught the writer's attention. He pulled it out and then shook his head ruefully.

"It seems that the fates want me to stay and go to your party, Kangin. My red-eye flight was cancelled until tomorrow night due to technical malfunctions."

"Sure makes you want to keep flying, doesn't it, Chunnieah?"

The light use of his nickname actually made the other man barely smile.

"Could say that."

Kangin was the one to catch Donghae's final bag as it drifted by for the now eighth time. He pulled off the small duffel and set it on the floor.

"I'll call a taxi and we'll get you hauled to the training center."

"We actually reserved a hotel, Boss." Hankyung returned.

"None of that. You're all my guests, so you'll crash at my place. Even if you'll be sleeping on training mats."

"Sounds like old times." Hankyung chuckled.

Donghae grinned brightly and turned to pick up his other small suitcase. His eyes caught a face gazing through the crowded walkways. The suitcase fell from his fingertips and without saying anything, Donghae suddenly bolted from his spot. Hankyung's eyes went wide.

"Donghae!!" the older man cried.

Donghae didn't respond. Instead he quickly began to weave through people heading toward the direction of the face. The image seemed to dissolve the closer the young man drew forward. A flash of hair melted through the crowd. Donghae pushed through the remaining crowd and then stood in a nearly empty space. He was dragging in his air. A sudden set of arms around his chest caused him to nearly scream.

"Donghae!" Hankyung gasped, trying to catch his breath. "Don't run off like that!"

The brunette turned to look up at Hankyung. The Chinese man was shocked to see a level of fear shimmering in his friend's dark eyes. He framed Donghae's face, pushing some of his longer hair from his cheeks.

"Hae, are you okay?"

The smaller man swallowed back a lump in his throat and then nodded slowly. He pressed himself close to Hankyung's body, clutching at his shirt.

"I... I thought I saw someone..."

".....a ghost..."

Hankyung felt Donghae trembling in his arms. He didn't ask any more questions, he had learned over the past couple years that some times the young man would respond with peculiar answers. The older man knew the reaction was somehow linked to Donghae's recent dreams. He vowed to himself that when the celebration was over, they would try and talk.

"Are you okay now?"

Donghae nodded against his chest. He pulled back and then tried to give out a strained laugh.

"Just a bit shaken up about being back in Seoul, I guess."

Hankyung made a sound of agreement and then slid his hand into Donghae's palm. He felt his partner lace his fingers tightly through his digits.

"Let's get going. You'll feel better after a meal and a bath."

"Are you going to take it with me?" Donghae piped up, his more playful nature already returning.

"Only if you're good."

The genuine smile that flashed over his lover's face put Hankyung more at ease. They two walked back to their waiting friends. Hankyung put Kangin and Yoochun's questions to rest quickly and the four headed toward the exit of the airport.

Unbeknownst to any of them, a duo watched silently from the shadows. The barest clink of a marble falling to the floor could be heard.

I always get such a smile on my face when I see a comment from you! ::chuckles::

I'm glad you appreciated the KangHan in this chapter, there will be a bit more periodically appearing through this storyline, especially when we start getting into the more intricate angsty parts.

I hope that you'll find the KangChun that is slowly developing as enjoyable as the "could have been" KangHan moments.

Hopefully the next chapter is worth the wait!

Impasse turned AAO addict
i think i'm going to have an aneurysm or a heart attack from the excitement and anticipation.

poor DongHae. i know how he feels about those luggage carousels. i hate how it seems so slow when it's coming towards you, and then just when you reach out to take your luggage, it seems to speed up that fraction of a second.

and his nightmares. i hope he'll be okay. i'm glad Hannie's there for him. i love the interaction between them. and KangIn ~ good ol' KangIn. he just warms my heart. i just LOVE this fic. i can't wait for the next chapter!

Re: Impasse turned AAO addict
Thank you so much for those lovely words, Imouotochan! I always appreciate the support you show my work!

Oi, I know, I HATE those luggage carousels. I remember one time visiting Florida it took me three times to finally catch my luggage and that was because I practically ran after it. =-.-=

More about Donghae's nightmares will be revealed, as will a major plotpoint during the party that was hopefully "turn the direction" of the storyline.

Kangin is just love, isn't he?
Sep. 19th, 2008 04:54 am (UTC)
i love this fic!
all the emotions and stuff..
and i really want to know what donghae had been dreaming about.
can't wait for more!!

Very curious about Donghae's ghost and nightmares... and ofcourse what will happen next...

KangChun! KangKyung = such sweet interaction... and ofcourse love HanHae!

Sep. 22nd, 2008 02:16 am (UTC)
Thank you so much!

I hope the next chapter will be worth the wait, I'm plotting it out as we speak.

I promise that Donghae's nightmares/dreams will be revealed soon and how it all plays into the storyline.

KangChun is the love in this storyline. (But not quite as much as the HanHae! XD)
Sep. 19th, 2008 02:11 pm (UTC)
Great chappie love it.

OooOo I'm wondering the dreams that Hae is having, is of his brother, and the blond guy with his partner at the airport is his brother????? *thinking*.

Waiting for next chapter.
Sep. 22nd, 2008 02:17 am (UTC)
Thank you so much!

Haefish's dreams will be revealed very soon, and as for the two men in the airport? They have a very interesting role in the storyline.

Hope the next chapter is worth the wait!

This was chapter was again so wonderful! And even though there were a lot of omens in this, generally, the mood was good so I'm still happy!

Hooray for Kangin and Hankyung interaction! I always love seeing them together. Plus, the part where Hankyung threw himself at Kangin gave me a wonderful, wonderful image! Hahahaha! Normally, we can't really see much of Kangin and Hankyung interacting closely in real life, so I'm always so happy to read some here!<3 THANK YOU! This chapter was a stress-reliever.XD

But poor Donghae! It's a good thing Hannie's there to protect him. But, who will be there when Hannie needs to be protected?XD Haha! Ah, this chapter just oozes with mystery on the part of Donghae. Donghae's dream, the person Donghae saw and tried to run after... I almost thought it was Shiwon when you mentioned:
'Through the flood of people, his sharp vision caught one person picking up luggage from the spinning carousel.

"....it can't be..."'

because it's logical that Hannie and Donghae would be picking up their luggage.XD Sadly, Shiwon really is dead, isn't he? Why do I keep on hoping that he isn't?! Hahaha!

I love reading your fics! They're always so wonderful and they always relieve me of my stress. Can't wait for the next one!
Sep. 22nd, 2008 02:20 am (UTC)
Thank you so much for those lovely words, I'm always so happy to get a compliment from you about my work.

Kangin and Hankyung interaction is pretty great, isn't it? I wish they did more together in real life, as I think they could be really amusing together.

Donghae's nightmares/dreams will be revealed in depth coming soon and why they have such a vital meaning in the storyline.

You made a very good point about who's going to protect Hankyung because when this all comes to a head in about 4(?) chapters, alot is going to change. (Keep the HanHae strong, right?!)

I wish I could bring Siwon back, as well as Ryeowook and my poor GYM boyz, but alas, I can not. However, if I plot my points right, Siwon will appear in a flashback once again, just have to make sure I work through it correctly.

I hope the next chapter is worth the wait!
Sep. 20th, 2008 04:28 pm (UTC)
uwaa~~ this is seriously getting very interesting. :D

1) HanHae makes me melt every time. They are so adorable together!! Hankyung's dedication to keep Hae safe and Hae's innocence just go so well together. But so sad, cuz their past just refuses to let either of them go. ;_____;
2) KangChun is slowly developing!! ♥
3) hmmm...mystery duo. Are they the same as the "T" guys I was guessing on a while back? Maybe not. Though...is marble dude (lol originality ftw) Donghae's "hyung"?

The plot thickens.
....even more. hehe. XDDDD

can't wait for more!! (but take your time! no need to rush.) ^_^
Sep. 22nd, 2008 02:23 am (UTC)
Thank you so much! And now hopefully I can return with a list of my own again! =^^=V

1. HanHae is the love, isn't it? Unfortunately, as you stated, their pasts won't let them rest quite yet. There is this air of "not quite comfortable with everything yet" that prevades this whole piece I think.

2. KangChun is slowly coming around. I'm hoping their relationship especially will evolve in a realistic manner.

3. Is the mystery duo the same "T" duo from previous? That I can't say right now. However, I will say that the two will be a major turning point in the plot! =^^=

I hope the next chapter is worth the wait!
Sep. 21st, 2008 03:16 pm (UTC)
omg my power was out because of the hurricane and i was going through fic withdrawals. finally, i can get my FIX! I'm glad you had fun at the con ^_^

OMG SPIEZ. Why did they have to agree to do another hit?! Just leaveeee. But wait, don't leave, cuz then I wouldnt have an awesome story to read. Darn you Taffy for making me blur the lines of reality! Poor Donghae, I feel so bad for him. So much turmoil D': I'm renaming this to Against All "Omg-this-is-so-juicy" Odds lmao
Sep. 22nd, 2008 02:24 am (UTC)
My heavens my dear, first of all, I'm so grateful your safe post-hurricane! I'm also grateful you got your power back on. I lost power for only a couple of days during a blizzard and that was miserable! (NO HEAT!)

::chuckles:: I'm so glad you enjoyed this chapter, it always makes me happy to read a comment from you.

The duo in the airport will provide a vital plotpoint/twist to the storyline, I hope that it will be worth the wait!

I like that new "title" for my story, I hope that I'll keep each chapter just as good as the next!
Sep. 22nd, 2008 02:01 am (UTC)
I am now bursting with curiosity and I fear for Hankyung even more than Donghae, for some reason ... :|

Eighth time? I thought it'd be the 7th :P
Sep. 22nd, 2008 02:26 am (UTC)
Thank you so much!

I actually figured it would be the eighth time since the guys were so busy talking, Donghae's bag would have floated by a couple more times already.

And there's good reason to fear for Hankyung. As much as there is to fear for Donghae and also for Eeteuk (Plot hint!)
(Deleted comment)
Sep. 24th, 2008 06:45 pm (UTC)
Wee, so happy to have you back, sweetie! ::big hugs:: And thank you for the wonderful comment on my chapter, I'm so glad you enjoyed it!

I really love Kangin and Hankyung's relationship too. There's so much history there and it just feels so comfortable. I'm hoping the developing KangChun will feel the same way.

Hae's mysterious hyung will be revealed in roughly 3(?) more chapters, which will add an interesting twist to this already weaving storyline. (Let's hope I can tie it all together! XD)

I hate luggage wheels and just thought Donghae would too. ::chuckles:: And thus the Fish has revealed his lack of skills!

Thank you for the compliment on my fan dancing too! I'll be actually teaching a demonstrative panel on fan dancing next year in Denver along with a panel on Johnny's Entertainment. (Which should be a riot!)

Hope the next chapter is worth the wait! =^^=V
